How Tablo works.

Tablo No Remote

Tablo devices don’t come with a remote control because they don’t connect directly to your television.

Tablo TV with remote

Once your Tablo device is set up, you’ll use the Tablo app on your smart TV or streaming device and your existing remote to control your DVR.

Tablo with multiple TVs

Just one Tablo device lets you watch TV on multiple compatible smart TVs and streaming devices in your home.

Where to place your TV antenna.

Indoor TV antennas, like the one included in the Tablo Total System, are a practical solution for those who live in urban areas. Those who live in suburban or rural areas will need a larger, outdoor antenna model.

If you purchased a standalone Tablo model and do not already have a TV antenna that works for you, you will need to purchase one based on your distance from the local broadcast towers and install it.

For a strong signal:

  • Your TV antenna should face your local broadcast towers.
  • If a roof or attic installation isn’t possible, place your antenna in an upstairs window.
  • Avoid obstructions like trees or buildings.

Tablo antenna connection

STEP 1 - Connect your TV antenna.

The coaxial cable of your TV antenna is round with a metal coupling at the end and a wire sticking out of the middle of the coupling.

Connect the end of your TV antenna’s coaxial cable to the antenna port on the far right of the back of your Tablo device.

Twist the hexagonal-shaped nut with your fingers to tighten it.

TIP – If you already have a TV antenna, you will need to disconnect the coaxial cable from the back of your television and connect it to the Tablo instead.

Splitting your TV antenna’s signal between your television and your Tablo is possible but this will reduce the overall antenna signal strength and can cause reception issues.

STEP 2 - Connect the power adapter.

Your Tablo device comes with a white power adapter.

Plug the large end of the included power adapter into the nearest wall outlet and the small end into the power port on the far left of the back of your Tablo device.

TIP – Your Tablo must be powered on at all times to ensure all recordings and its overnight maintenance cycle can be completed.

Tablo Device Connections - Ethernet

STEP 3 - Connect the Ethernet cable (optional).

The included Ethernet cable has plastic connectors at both ends that look like phone jacks.

If the best location for your TV antenna is also near your home’s Wi-Fi router, you should choose to connect your Tablo device to the internet using Ethernet.

Connect one end to your home’s Wi-Fi router and the other to the Ethernet port on the left side of the back of your Tablo.

Skip this step if your Wi-Fi router is not nearby.

TIP – Connecting your Tablo device via Ethernet is easier and will offer more stable performance than connecting it via Wi-Fi.

Troubleshooting tips.

Select the problem you’re encountering from the list below for tips on how to resolve it.

Tablo cannot be set up using a smart TV or streaming device. Please download the Tablo app on your smartphone or tablet to get started.

Tablo cannot be set up without a smartphone or tablet. Please contact Tablo Support for remote setup assistance.

If you’re unable to download the Tablo app using these instructions, please contact Tablo Support for remote setup assistance.

If you do not see your Tablo’s special Wi-Fi network (Tablo_XXXX) during the Wi-Fi setup process, take the following steps:

  • Ensure the device is not connected to your network via Ethernet.
  • Reboot your Tablo using the reset button on the bottom of the device.
  • Try completing the setup process again.

Before you begin the Wi-Fi setup process, your Tablo’s blue light should be pulsing. If it is not, take the following steps:

  • Ensure the device is not connected to your network via Ethernet.
  • Reboot your Tablo using the reset button on the bottom of the device.
  • Try the setup process again.

Please verify the password you're entering is correct.  Wi-Fi passwords are case-sensitive, so make sure you have the correct capitalization.

Click here for instructions on how to transition your Tablo from an Ethernet connection to a Wi-Fi connection.

If you’ve tried the tips above and are still unable to get Tablo connected via Wi-Fi, try using Tablo's Internet Setup Wizard which is an online companion to the Tablo app for first-time setup. The wizard interfaces with your Tablo device and the Tablo servers at HQ to provide real-time instructions and troubleshooting to help you get your Tablo connected.

If you are still unable to connect via Wi-Fi, connect your Tablo via Ethernet temporarily and contact Tablo support for assistance.

If your Tablo app is stuck on step 1 of 3 (downloading) when updating the firmware, you can reboot your Tablo and try again. DO NOT reboot your Tablo during step 2 or 3 as this can corrupt the device's database.

Our nightly maintenance processes may find and fix this issue automatically. Please wait 1-2 days and if the issue persists, try changing your zip code in the SETTINGS screen of your Tablo app to one from a neighboring city.

There are four main reasons why your Tablo may not be able to pick up a channel that should be within range of your TV antenna. Click here to learn more and how to solve this.

If your video is pixelated and/or the audio drops out when playing back over-the-air channels, the signal strength coming from your TV antenna is inadequate or reduced. Check your TV antenna's connection to Tablo and/or its position.

Then run a new channel scan within the SETTINGS screen to determine the current signal strength.

More rarely, this can be caused by the signal from your TV antenna being too strong. In this case, you may wish to disable Tablo's in-line amplifier and then run a fresh scan.

Buffering is typically a home network bandwidth issue. If possible, connect your streaming device and/or Tablo via Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi to rule out potential Wi-Fi interference and network congestion.

Mesh networking equipment can also cause frequent buffering on video playback. If you have a mesh network, try to connect Tablo directly to one of the access points and/or move your Tablo and streaming devices closer to the nearest access point.

This can occur if the signal from your TV antenna is weak or your external hard drive was unavailable at the time of the recording. Your TV antenna and/or your hard drive may require attention.
